Altos de Chavon

Altos de Chavon (The Heights of Chavon) offers spectacular views over the winding River Chavón and the Caribbean Sea but its greatest attractions are its Mediterranean ambience and architecture and the sheer variety and vitality of its artistic activity which encompasses music, painting, ceramic, textiles and design.

Built of rock and paved in stone, all the streets and buildings of Altos de Chavon are connected by narrow alleyways so it is esasy for the visitor to imagine that this is a town in southern Europe .

The Altos de Chavon Amphitheater, is one of the word¨s most outstanding venues. Among the host of international stars who have appeared in spectaculars here are Shakira, Durán Durán, Air Supply , Carlos Santana, Juan Luis Guerra, La Ley , Gloria Estevan, Julio Iglesias, Ruben Blades, Olga Tañon, Gilberto Santa Rosa and Alejandro Sanz.

The many attractions and activities include. Art Galleries, a 5,000 seat Amphitheater, ceramic and textile workshops, the Regional Archeological, Museum an the School of Design which is affiliated to Parson School of Design New York. There are also several excellent restaurants.

On the edge  of a gorge whose waters flow into the River Chavón are a group of buildings one of the finest of which  is St Stanislas Church, Iglesia de San Estanislao. It has a relic of Poland¨s saint presented by Pope John Paul II.
